The Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) has inducted Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, as an associate member.
The induction took place at the Institute’s Council Chamber in Lagos.
In a statement issued by the institute, Mr. Oluropo Dada, the 13th President and Chairman of the Governing Council, commended Onyeagwu for completing the institute’s professional examination despite his demanding schedule.
Mr. Dada encouraged Dr. Onyeagwu to contribute his extensive expertise by serving on one or more of the institute’s committees, thereby aiding the advancement of the stockbroking profession in Nigeria.
The CIS President emphasized that the examination is recognized globally as one of the most challenging.
He also highlighted that Dr. Onyeagwu completed an intensive practical internship under the mentorship of senior colleagues in the institute.
“He has gone through intense practical internships under highly respected senior colleagues, during which he demonstrated a high degree of competence as an investment analyst, with a trustworthy character that makes him stand out as an ethical professional who can be trusted by investors in Nigeria and abroad,” he said.
Dada emphasized that in the stockbroking profession, the first rule is integrity, encapsulated by the tenet: “My word is my bond.”
He acknowledged Onyeagwu’s familiarity with the principle, given his illustrious banking career. However, as the President of the institute, Dada said it was his duty to remind him that there is no place for rascality in the stockbroking profession.
Responding, Onyeagwu expressed appreciation to the Institute and promised to abide by the ethics of the profession.
He stated that the Nigerian capital market had a lot of opportunities awaiting to be tapped.
He noted that in the past decade, there have been no major or mega Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in the market.
He added, “We will work together to deepen the market and support market literacy as well.”
According to the statement, Onyeagwu is trained in reputable institutions of learning in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
He is a graduate of Accounting from Auchi Polytechnic where he obtained the Ordinary National diploma in 1984 and Higher National Diploma in 1987.
He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1989 while he was still undergoing the compulsory National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) post-graduation and was named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) in 2003.
He is an alumnus of the prestigious University of Oxford, England, from where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Strategy and a certificate in Macroeconomics amongst others.
